MAPS accurately reflects the sensory and emotional components of pain in critically ill children. It was developed using physiological and behavioural responses observed directly in this group of children experiencing pain. It is a useful pain assessment tool in the child who cannot accurately report a subjective pain score due to communication barriers and/or sedation.
